At the End of the Term

The end of the term is traditionally the period when institutions give out end of term feedback surveys to students. In October of 2021 the Ad Hoc Committee on Evaluation wrote several recommendations for revamping the University’s evaluation system, including reworking and eliminating questions to eliminate bias and increase the relevance to the course instruction. NYU now used a new platform Explorance Blue and a revamped end of semester Course Feedback process.

Schools may use end of term evaluations in various ways, often defined by their culture and specific needs. Unlike other forms of feedback discussed in these pages, end of term evaluations or feedback can play a role in the tenure and promotion process. They are also in many cases used by students to determine which course or section of a course to take. That does not mean that faculty cannot or should not use them as a source of information when considering future adjustments to a course. A very nice guide to revising courses based on end of term evaluations was created by Boise State, and you can find that here

If as a faculty member, however, you would like a thought partner on what strategies (including those outlined above and elsewhere on this site) you might use to respond to your course evaluations, and in what ways you might adjust your course before teaching it again, please reach out at any time to teaching@nyu.edu.
